Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Travel Plan Decision Postponed Until Late Summer (Oregon)

The thousands of people anxious to find out where motor vehicles will be able to travel on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest will have to wait a while longer than forest officials recently estimated.
Last week Wallowa-Whitman officials said Supervisor Steve Ellis probably would announce his decision on the forest?s long-awaited Travel Management Plan in late spring.
But on Wednesday Ellis said late summer is now the more likely time frame.

Road Closures Southeast of Catherine Summit – Wallowa-Whitman National Forest

Baker City, Oregon – Work has begun on the Medical Springs Stewardship contract and, for public safety, roads in the area are closed to all motorized vehicles until further notice. The roads affected by the closure are: 7700-945, 7700-940, 7746-050, and 7746-205.
These roads are located in Township 6 South, Range 41 East, Sections 1 and 12 and in Township 6 South, Range 42 East, Sections 5, 6, 7, and 8, southeast of Catherine Creek Summit.
This contract is partially funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds and includes road maintenance, logging, thinning, pruning, and slash treatment. Some of the work involves removing wood to the landing using helicopters.
The roads leading into the area are posted with closure signs and there are barricades on the roads near the logging activity.

Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Motorized Travel Management DEIS Now Available

The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, located in northeastern Oregon, has released their Travel Management Plan Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for public review and comment.
The Forest Service (FS) is asking for your input during a 60-day comment period, which will end on August 18, 2009.The public is invited to suggest changes, provide new information, and offer other alternatives. Your comments will assist in completing the analysis for travel management, and following the FS review of the comments received, a final EIS will be issued with a Record of Decision detailing the decision points.
