Tour Announcement: L. T. Murray Forest Roads, 08-21-09

August 21, 2009 (FRIDAY)

Posted by Jerry on the Forum.

The L.T. Murray Wildlife Recreation Area covers thousands of acres and is dotted with many and varied access roads, some of which we have already explored with PNW Backroad Adventures. But, there are others including the Tamarack Ridge Road, Page Pasture Road, North Riggs Ridge Road and Tar Paper Flats Road that we have not explored. And if there is time we plan on taking the Durr Road to Umtanum Ridge and driving a road heading toward the Yakima River Canyon in hopes that we have a good vantage point above the river.

Most of our travels will be in scenic sparse pine forests that offer occasional views of the Thorp Valley and meandering creek bottoms. Road surfaces will be a mix of gravel, dirt, heavy pit-run and bed rock. Stock SUV’s and pickups should work fine. If time permits we plan on driving to the South LTM to drive a sagebrush route to a ridge above the Yakima River.

Bring a sack lunch, plenty of drinking water, snacks, etc. and be advised that there are no restroom facilities so please plan ahead. Primary communications will be via CB Radio Channel 22 and secondary communications via VHF Amateur Radio 146.580MHz simplex.

We are meeting at the Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall, Exit 101 off I-90.

Arrange for breakfast on your own prior and join us in the parking lot before our departure time of 9:00 AM. There is a service station next door in case you need to top off.

Remember, this is a FRIDAY event and we hope to see you there!

For discussion and more details, visit Tour Announcement: L. T. Murray Forest Roads, 08-21-09

Tour Announcement – Clemen Mountain Tour – 10.04.2008

Join us in Naches, Washington to explore Forest Service, Department of Wildlife and DNR roads on and around Clemen Mountain. Clemen is actually a 4000′ high ridge that separates the Naches and Wenas Valleys and most of it lies within the Wenatchee National Forest and the Oak Creek Wildlife Area. It is not unusual to spot elk and big horn sheep on Clemen and sometimes in one particular area the deer are so plentiful it is almost impossible to keep count of your sightings.

Do the Math Before Trading in Your SUV or Truck

20080404_WYNOOCHEE_017.jpg With the price of gasoline approaching $4.00 per gallon, more and more people are trading in their “gas guzzling” SUV or truck for a more fuel efficient vehicle. Most people simply think about much it costs to fill up their tank without considering the actual costs.

The way I figure it, I own my Land Cruiser free and clear. If I was to go out and finance a new vehicle, the payments alone would probably exceed $500 (and probably be much more). That’s a lot of gas I could buy each month.

I found a post on pricewheels.com that lays out the true costs of replacing your old vehicle. You can read it at Dumping Gas Guzzler For Fuel Sipper May Cost More Than You Think

Trip Report: Washington Cascades Overland Tour 2007 – Day One (08.10.07)

Today was going to be a very long day. Not only would I be attempting to reach my destination in Packwood, I would also have to include the drive from my home in the middle of Washington state to the southern border near Oregon to start the tour of the Washington Cascade Mountains. My goal was to complete the drive from the Oregon border to the British Columbia in four days.
