It sounds like this trip would cross some major highways along the way, so some not wanting to do the whole ride could bail out along the way, huh?

Correct, you are never very far from being able to get home if needed.

Default Idaho and Montana via Paved Roads

Backroad driving in Idaho and Montana could encompass a large variety of roads. Everything from city boulevards to low-use highways to unimproved two-track goat trails.

The Continental Divide Tour has received a considerable amount of positive attention and it probably deserves it's own thread. I think it would turn out to be THE tour of the year!

But, let me propose another way of touring Idaho and Montana, something more laid back. My wife and I would like to explore scenic areas, ghost towns and historical sites via paved backroads. Oh, we would venture off pavement on occasion, but mainly to access an interesting destination point. We would spend as many nights as possible in motels and camp out only when there are no rooms available near areas we are reluctant to leave. We would follow only a general plan with no itinerary and no reservations.

Does anyone else have similar interests?
