I think a trip to some Oregon Ghost towns, sometime during the month of October, would be a really fun trip. Does anyone have any suggestions of good materials (books, websites, etc.) I can use to do some research?

Thanks! I had found some of those previously, but not the second one. I was also wondering if anyone knew of any good books? I love to read about the history of some of these places...it really enriches the experience when you visit them.

I think that a ghosttown tour in October is a brilliant idea! You have motivated me my friend.

Due to the email from backroads driver Yakimabelle, i found these two sites when i googled Bodie.
Bodie SHP, Bodie State Park, Bodie State Historic Park - Bodie.com talks about that one town.
Bodie ghost town shows many pictures of Bodie.
Ghost Town Map | Arizona | California | Colorado | Nevada | New Mexico | Idaho | Montana | Utah | USA | US has an interactive map of various ghost towns all over the place. I plan to look at it more myself.

I've been doing alot of research as I am planning on finding obscure ones. An example of one of my future trips is "The Mohave River Road". Google that! It starts in Az and runs to Death Valley. Along the route are abandoned Calvary forts still standing! Jim, you're in Gresham and I'm in Vancouver....maybe we should talk at my house. I bought books, cartagraphic software and outfitted my jeep to do the trips. Working on building my expedition trailer from an old Army trailer. Drop me an email if you want. Somewhere around here I have a book, I think its called Ghost Towns of the Northwest. I think its packed away right now.
Great book, the author actually went arond and visited all these ghost towns, has pretty good history and also tells the story of what he found when he visited. It is a bit outdated, I think the copyright was around 1972.
Are you talking about the Old Mojave Road that runs from Fort Mojave on the Colorado river through the Mojave National Preserve to Afton (just short of Barstow)? I did a search but "Mojave River Road" doesn't bring up much. The Old Mojave road runs east/west though...not northwest/southeast which is the general relationship of the Mojave National Preserve to Death Valley.
I am planning on running the Old Mojave road next month...that area is chock full of all kinds of great history. It's about a 2.5 to 3 day trip if you take your time and investigate some of the historical sites.

Last night, when I posted, I spoke in general terms and was excited to hear about the ghost town postings. I used to live in Laughlin when I worked in the culinary world. There's alot to see out there. When I do go in the Spring, I will explore both sides of the Colorado River and base myself in Laughlin. On my excursion, I will work my way towards California. On that leg, I will enter the Death Valley area. Also, I want to see the many waterfalls that are in that area of the desert. There are too many things to see in that area to list. There's a desert road from Oatman to Wicki-up that I want to do. Catherine's Landing has areas, for me, to explore. Christmas Tree Canyon is an area of interest, to me, also. Just north of Kingman are some "sand towns" that have areas of interst to me.
Also, when I do my trip, I'm taking some desert trails from Henderson and working my way south towards the Avi Casino.
Be sure to take some coins (or a frog) to leave at the frog shrine.PHP Code:I am planning on running the Old Mojave road next month.
