Default Idaho Side of Hells Canyon

Idaho Side of Hells Canyon

There are two unimproved roads that lead to the Snake River on the Idaho side of Hells Canyon. Both are accessed from US Hwy 95. I have seen the roads on maps and noticed vehicles parked next to the river on two occasions that we rode jet boats up-river from Lewiston and Clarkston. It is strange to see pickup trucks parked on otherwise uninhabited lands on the Idaho side while the Oregon side has been designated as part of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area with virtually no visible signs of human activity.

I think it would be fun to drive both roads before they are absorbed into national holdings and while we are in the area we might visit the nearby ghost towns of Rankins Mill, Helena, Landore, Decorah, Granet Town, Placer Basin and Cuprum among others.

That would be an interesting trip. I have often thought of exploring the area.

We have rafted the canyon several times and actually camped on one of the roads last time. Good thing there was no middle of the night traffic.

I understand the roads going down to the Salmon west of White Bird can get a little rough/confusing. Not sure along the Snake.

Re: confusing, they just might be. I did a quick check on Google Maps and I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't unmarked. Guess we'll never know until we get there. I'm hoping someone from that area might volunteer to lead us through the maze.
