Just a few weeks ago I was up I-90 exploring around and found that if you take exit 40 (Tinkham Rd) and drive Tinkham Road for about 5 miles east. Turn right on NFD 5510 RD and it will take you up under one of the Iron Horse Railway trestles and continue UP for quite a long ways. Eventually you will be on NFD 430 RD ascending quite nicely. The road ends at about 3000ft (according to my topo?) so the views are really quite nice. We had a great lunch on top and then headed lower and explored some other roads that were typically shorter but fun just to explore!

For me living in the Renton/Issaquah area it's just one of places so easy to escape to on a Sunday afternoon or???

yeah I usually take that road in the winter to go snow wheeling. it makes for a fun day.. but the end of the road gets a little scary on snow!

I found a side trail off the lower tinkham road that gets up into some 4x4 - i am going to go explore it a bit sometime...

There is a lot of private property along the I-90 corridor and other areas as well, much of it belonging to relatively new owners who purchased it from our old friends Weyerhaeuser and other northwest forest products companies. Many of the new owners are gating their roads (yes, THEIR ROADS) to cut down on traffic that otherwise would necessitate the expense of thousands of dollars in maintenance, to say nothing of picking up litter and garbage. I can't say as I blame them and any of us might do the same thing if we were in their shoes.

It seems to me that if private roads are the only access or an historic access to Forest Service or DNR properties there should be some sort of maintenance agreement between the owners and whichever governmental agency the road benefits. Actually I thought maintenance was already being performed by benefited governmental agencies.

The other alternative is to pay for use. Perhaps an agreement between users, private owners and government. Buy a user sticker for $35 per year and drive the roads. Hey, it might be coming to that on FS and DNR roads in the near future.

In the mean time, TREAD LIGHTLY and help support our hobby with a good face forward.

I should start by saying I felt guilty that I didn't go on the group drive Saturday like I'd been wanting and planning to do. I really needed to catch up with some friends so exploring on our own fit better. We didnt start at the pass, but further west in Easton. From there we drove FS roads to Hwy 410 around Federated Forest and Sun Top. We took roads 41/Cabin Creek, 52, 7036, I think 7038, 7030, and 70. Other than the first mile, where the bridge washed out, it's all pretty cushy gravel roads. It was a fun drive. I plan on doing some more exploring in the area. I do wish the Lester route was open.

Cool. That is a neat drive. You crossed Tacoma Pass on the 52 and for all practical purposes you crossed Green Pass on the 7036. Gotta watch that one because the gate at the top of the hill is frequently locked. I really enjoy routes that cross over the mountains and your Saturday trek is a favorite of mine.
