If I can find somebody to tag along I would like to drive the Whitehorse Ranch Road between Hwy 95 and the Pueblo Valley then head north and drive the Alvord Desert road from Fields to Hwy 95. And from 95 continue past the Crowley Ranch to Harper (or reverse the order depending upon coming or going). I would also like to drive Hwy 140 from Denio to Lakeview and roads north of there, including the Antelope Refuge.
That is pretty much one of my future drives.
Let me know.

I'll do some thinking about both the Owyhee trip and the Steens trip and come up with something more concrete soon. If anybody wants to put in their 2 cents please do it now. Thanks.

Well I don't know about anybody else but it's gonna take me 8 hours just to drive out there so if you feel like throwing that into one of the trips I don't see any problems...
There, now you have my 2 cents

Good point, Ryan, I'm sure others have to do the same. Would you try to drive over after work on Friday? If people can take off a little early on Friday they can make it all the way to JV that night. Otherwise spend the night in Burns and drive into JV on Saturday morning. Let's hear it from folks who are planning to attend. Thanks.

Is that Saturday or Friday? I've got Thursday and Friday off and was planning on driving over Thursday and sticking around through Monday then heading back west on Tuesday

Fantastic! You will have plenty of time for anything we plan. I am still putting some finishing touches on the Friday drive, subject to further input, but here's what it looks like so far:

Friday: Meet in Ontario, drive W on Hwy 26 to Harper, turn SW on Crowley Road (pasing Skull Springs and Crowley Ranch), cross Hwy 78 and continue SW on Fields-Denio Road (passing Alvord Ranch, Alvord Desert and southern side of Steens Mtn), continue south and take the Whitehorse Ranch Road NE (passing Whitehorse Ranch) to Hwy 95 where we will continue toward Jordan Valley. It will be a LONG day and lots of miles.

Saturday: Meet in Jordan Valley, drive W on Hwy 95, turn S on Three Forks Road, cross the Owyhee River at Three Forks and continue on dirt roads the rest of the day. There is a bridge at Three Forks, but other crossings my necessitate fording the river.

From this point onward I will need to know whether participants can camp out or will need a motel. There are literally hundreds of miles of dirt roads, all poorly marked, and it is a given that we will encounter rough, slow-going roadway and make several wrong turns so we will need as much time as can find for driving. Camping out would be the best thing time-wise. We assume we will have all day Saturday and Sunday to explore and some of us can stay through Monday as well. One of our goals is to reach the corner of Oregon/Idaho at the Nevada border.

Help! If you are planning to go I need your input to wrap this up.

Jerry, just a consideration for you on your planning. As you know, we're going to be over in the area earlier in the week but won't be able to stay for the weekend. Bummer...

You're right on your Friday plans being a long day. I figure you'll cover 330 miles and at least 11 hours or more of driving. You won't be able to see much around the Whitehorse Ranch but just south of the ranch are the Trout Creek Mountains and just to the east and connected to them are the Oregon Canyon Mountains before reaching Hwy 95. The views up there are just fantastic, lots of wildlife and last time I was through there were absolutely no other people.

I realize you wouldn't have the time that day to see that section (that's more than a half day by itself) but it's just a thought for your planning. Maybe on one of the other trips even. It would be nice while you're that close. That (Oregon Canyon) road comes out about ten miles south of Basque Station on Hwy 95.

Just FYI, not trying to intrude.

Thanks, Mick, good info. I have the Oregon Canyon Road (as well as the Trout Creek Road) marked on my map as roads I would like to drive someday. If we find time on Friday we might go down that way, otherwise will save it for another trip. I imagine we will be scheduling many more trips to SE Oregon.

I plan on camping the whole time, even if we're in a town. My Mom is also good with camping too. BTW, she plans on coming. My buddy Casey may also come in his Tacoma but I wouldn't plan on it yet....

After laying out some prospective routes on an Owyhee Country BLM map I decided to run the plans by the BLM office in Vale, Oregon. I talked with a couple of rangers who informed me that (1) by late May virtually all snow should be melted and it would probably be a good time to enter the area, (2) we should watch out for gumbo mud after heavy rains, (3) all roads depicted on their maps are open as far as he knows, (4) one of the river crossings (fords) on the main river will probably have too high a water level to cross safely plus they are thinking of permanently closing that crossing for ecological reasons, and (5) only one of the routes I selected may have to be altered due to high water.

The ranger with the most knowledge of the area told me there are very few people who live south of Rome, Oregon and we may not see another person out there for days. We talked about raising help in case of an emergency and he said even their BLM radios don't work from the river canyons. He suggested that if we feel the need for emergency contact with the outside world we should consider renting a satellite phone.

So all in all the conversation went well and unless we encounter several days of downpour we should have a fun and interesting trip.
