Default Wandering Wasco County - 9/15/2007

Tour Announcement

Wandering Wasco County (See additional posts below)
September 15, 2007

When Wasco County was created in 1854 it consisted of
all the Oregon Territory between the Cascade Range and
the Rocky Mountains. It was the largest county ever
formed in the United States and portions of Wasco
County, as it was originally drawn, now lie in Idaho,
Montana and Wyoming. Thousands of pioneers flocked to
Wasco County via the Oregon Trail to garner their
share of natural resources and federal land grants.

Please join us in exploring county roads and country
lanes as we pass farms and orchards on our way to the
hills above The Dalles on the Columbia River. We will
confine our travels between the Mount Hood National
Forest on the west and the Deschutes River on the east
and will finish our scenic tour by late afternoon.

Meet at the McDonald's Restaurant at Exit 87,
Interstate 84. Come early for breakfast or coffee and
plan to leave at 10:00 AM. I can't say which vehicle we
will be driving at this time, but whatever it is it will have
a Backroad Drivers Northwest window or bumper sticker.

Hope you can join us!

Jerry

PS Wasco County and The Dalles are rich in both
history and scenery so make a weekend of it and visit
the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County
Historical Museum, the Fort Dalles Museum, Historic
Downtown and Old St. Peter's Landmark. And for
scenery check out the Vista House at Crown Point and
drive the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Wandering Wasco County (Update)
September 15, 2007

Our plan is to explore county roads and country lanes in the hills above the Columbia Gorge near The Dalles, Oregon; passing orchards, farms, ranches and forests. Since our first announcement it has come to our attention that "The Festival of Wheels" is taking place in Goldendale and that perhaps people would rather attend those activities instead. http://www.cityofgoldendale.com/events.shtml#sep

We are flexible and will go with the group concensus. We are happy driving backroads, watching motor sports or a mix of both. No matter what we decide the trip is on and we hope to see you in The Dalles!

Meet at McDonald's Restaurant near Exit 87, Interstate 84. Come early for breakfast or coffee and plan to leave at 10:00 AM. I can't say which vehicle we will be driving at this time, but look for Backroad Drivers Northwest window stickers.

Just a reminder, the Wasco County trip is coming up in a couple of weeks and we hope to see you there! We have some neat roads planned, a little bit of everything from paved country lanes to gravel Forest Service roads and with the motor sport activities happening in Goldendale, just a few miles away, our options are broadened. Whatever we do it will be fun.

See you in The Dalles!
