Default The Northwest's Forgotten Corner Run, 2012

    SECOND ANNUAL...

    Forgotten Corner Run
An Adventure in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada
    and Explorations in Southern Oregon

    September 8 thru 15, 2012
Mark your calendars for another adventure in the the Northwest's Forgotten Corner. This year we are visiting the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon in Northern Nevada while following the Applegate Trail from Imlay, NV to Fandango Pass in the far northeastern corner of California...then on to Cedarville, CA or Lakeview, OR for more backroad adventure.

The Applegate Trail, aka the South Road, branched off the Oregon Trail at Fort Hall Idaho where it followed the California Trail across the northwestern corner of Utah before making a sweep across northern Nevada along the Humboldt River until it veered off in the direction of Oregon near Imlay. Much of the trail is still visible and when not driving on top of it we will see several segments of it as we pass such landmarks as Antelope Springs, Rabbit Hole Springs, Sulpher Ghost Town, the Black Rock Desert Playa, Black Rock Springs, Double Hot Springs, Hardin City Ghost Town, Soldier Meadows, High Rock Canyon and Fandango Pass. On this trip we will follow the trail only as far as Goose Lake before continuing our backroad adventure in southern Oregon and northern Nevada.

We are planning for both indoor lodging and campsites so folks can choose whichever they wish. We don't have all the lodging details worked out yet, but for now you might check out the Soldier Meadows Ranch web site where we will be staying on Saturday, the first night. Soldier Meadows is a working cattle ranch that offers private rooms, a bunk house, tent camping, RV sites and meals. But, they are expensive! Read their information carefully and contact them early via email for details and/or reservations. There is also free camping down the road on BLM land.

For safety sake bring enough water for two full days as there is little or no potable water along the trail. Be advised that roads are rough and unimproved and high ground clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles are required. Tires must be in good condition, preferably LT rated truck tires and a full size spare is a must, two is better. The distance between gas stations is about 200 miles over rough roads, sometimes in 4-wheel drive, so it would be a good idea to carry extra fuel unless your vehicle has a really big tank. Cell phones will not work for most of the trip, but there are 2-meter/440 repeaters in Gerlach, Alturas and Lakeview to connect ham radio operators with the outside world. More on all this safety stuff later. For now just plan ahead and mark this trip on your calendar.

All, I know this thread does not revolve around me, but perhaps others with kids have interest too. First day of school for the 2012-2013 year is 4-September; is there anyway (with enough interest of course) this could be bumped up a couple weeks? Also, having attended before, I believe Burning Man is the week prior to the planned trip so it may be nice to visit Black Rock and the Playa before masses ascend on it?

Thank you humbly in advance for considerations!

I understand your predicament, but our trip leaders have set the dates around their schedules so it is pretty much inflexible.

And you are correct, the Burning Man event takes place the week leading up to and through the Labor Day Weekend. There shouldn't be anything left of it by the time we arrive.

The Burning Man organization does a fantastic job of cleaning up the playa plus I don't think the route will take us anywhere near the Burning Man site unless we make a side trip into Gerlach.

That sounds real interesting. What kind of roads, how fast do you travel, how many hours a day, etc?

Sort of like "how high is up".

All sorts of roads/trails. Quite often rough, slow going roads/tracks with an occasional spot of 4x4. You should have tough multi-ply tires. There may be some pin-striping but probably not much on this trip. As fast as required which is to say we are old farts and not interested in setting speed records. We keep a pretty steady pace but are always ready to stop for a photo op, pit stop, etc. How long is however long it takes but again we are not young studs so figure accordingly.
