Default Naneum & North Colockum, Sept 5, 2009

    Naneum & North Colockum
    September 5, 2009

Join us on a run to the North Colockum and the recently created Naneum State Forest north of Ellensburg. We will explore roads and trails from the sagebrush covered hills above Wenatchee to high elevation pine forests on Naneum Ridge.

Starting from Ellensburg we will follow the Coleman Canyon Road to the Colockum Wildlife Area and take in the scenery from Wenatchee Mountain and other overlooks on our way to the remoteness of the Naneum State Forest.

Most road surfaces will be of improved gravel, crushed rock or pit run so SUV's and pickups should work fine for this tour. We will monitor CB channel 22 and 146.580 VHF. Please bring a lunch, snacks and plenty of drinking water. Restroom facilities will be far and few between, if any, so plan ahead.

Meet at the Bar 14 Ranch House Restaurant, I-90, Exit 109 in Ellensburg. Come early for breakfast or coffee and plan on leaving at 9:00 AM. Look for our rigs with Backroad Drivers Northwest or PNW Adventures.com window stickers.

    See you there!

I don't have either of those. How do I get them?

Oh yeah, we will be there in the Blue 99 XJ.

Man, I'll be vacationing (camping) down in the Gifford Pinochet National forest that weekend We'll probably be at Iron Creek Campground south of Randal. We'll be in the area from the 4th - 12th.

130 miles of driving one way is more work than I want while on vacation

Hmm, I wonder if we've made reservation yet???

Yes you will see us this weekend . I'll probably take it easy on the truck since this will be the first run since front diff was replaced.

Bummer, That is the Husky Season opener and we have season tickets with Wendy's family for the first time in 8 years. Sounds like a good drive.

We didn't even think about it when we set it up, but yup, that is a big weekend for Husky fans. I hope the Dogs do well this year. We'll miss seeing you.

    http://www.dnr.wa.gov/AboutDNR/ManagedLands/Pages/amp_rec_naneum_ridge_state_forest.aspx

    NANEUM RIDGE STATE FOREST
Located on the eastern slopes of the central Cascade Mountains and south of the city of Wenatchee, Naneum (nah-num) Ridge State Forest includes 71,000-acres of mostly forested uplands.
With its mix of ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, white fir trees, this area is habitat for deer, bears, cougars, and abundant bird life. The Naneum area also is home to one of the largest elk herds in the state of Washington and includes prime elk calving areas. Portions of the forest are a critical corridor between the winter and summer ranges of the Yakima and Colockum elk herds.
As with other state lands, DNR manages the Naneum Ridge State Forest for sustainable forestry, fire control, and wildlife habitat while also assuring the public access to enjoy the area’s scenery and recreation opportunities. Revenue produced by DNR’s management of this area helps support public school construction.
    What to do there
There are no developed recreational sites or facilities in the Naneum Ridge State Forest. As with most DNR-managed lands, it is open year around for dispersed recreation, including hiking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding. Seasonal hunting and fishing is regulated by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Motorized users can use up to 109 miles of marked ‘green dot’ roads. The forest’s Green Dot Road Management System allows the public to drive on any dirt road marked by green dots on white posts. Vehicles are not allowed to go off-road.
Download the most recent map of green dot roads in Naneum Ridge. (Updated Fall 2008. Supercedes all previous green dot maps for this area.)
The forest also has 279 miles of road designated for nonmotorized uses such as horseback riding.
