Default Slide Ridge (07-19-08)

Slide Ridge
July 19, 2008

Join us!
The view from Slide Ridge in the Wenatchee National Forest takes in the southern half of Lake Chelan, surrounding mountain peaks and miles of eastern Washington farmland. The shade of heavy pine forests and gentle breezes usually provide cool temperatures on otherwise hot summer days.

Slide Ridge is the first mountain you see to the west of Lake Chelan and it is accessed via Forest Service roads from Twenty Five Mile Creek, from Ardenvoir and from the Upper Entiat Valley. The Slide Ridge Road, FR 8410, is only 27 miles long and together with a drive up to Chelan Butte our mid-July trek will take the best part of a day, but there might be a little time left to explore the town. The resort town of Chelan sits on the east end of the lake and offers a variety of fun things to keep us entertained.

Anytime we drive Forest Service roads, we recommend high ground clearance vehicles and we suggest you bring plenty of drinking water, a sack lunch and snacks. If we happen upon a restaurant around lunchtime we will probably stop.

We will meet in Wenatchee, drive Alternate Highway 97 up the west side of the Columbia River and access the Slide Ridge Road from the Entiat Valley. Let us know if you are planning to attend by replying to this post or emailing us directly and we will send you the time and meeting place. We hope to here from you.

Default Hang Gliding at Chelan Butte

Hang Gliding & Paragliding

During the hot summer months, hang glider and paraglider pilots from around the world come to Chelan to soar their famous air. Pilots launch from Chelan’s Sky Park on top of Chelan Butte, using rising pockets of hot air called thermals to lift them 9,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level. Hang glider pilots can then travel as far as Idaho or Canada.

Hang gliding and paragliding are extreme sports that are generally not spectator friendly, but a trip to the top of the butte to watch the pilots launch is worth the drive. The best viewing time is between noon and 2 p.m., when the thermals become active.

A dirt road that switches back and forth up the butte will take you to the top - the ride is slow and quite bumpy.

Only 6 more days!

Drop me an email and I'll send you the time and meeting place.

I'd love to take a trip to this area, but my summer is pretty well booked until September

I'll have to catch it the next time around. And don't forget to post pictures of your trip!

Slide Ridge Tour at Lake Chelan
This Saturday, July 19th

For anyone who might be thinking of joining us and is looking for other things to do, here's a fun Sunday adventure. How about taking a round trip boat ride up Lake Chelan to the town of Stehekin. Other than flying it's the only way to get there and the scenery is beautiful. Check it out at:
