Default Modoc NF Back Country Discovery Route - July 10 - 14

Modoc Back Country Discovery Route - Call for drivers.

I am leading a trip driving the Modoc NF Back Country Discovery Route July 10 thru July 13th.

Thursday – July 10.
Drive to Klamath Falls and stay at the Super8 motel.

Friday – July 11.
Leave Klamath Falls by 7:00 AM and drive south to Captain Jacks Stonghold and then to the Lava Beds National Monument. The start of the route is south of the Lava Beds NM starting at Medicine Lake. After Medicine Lake we retrace our route for a few miles and then head east. We may have to dry camp but I hope to reach an established camp ground. Be prepared for mosquitoes.

Saturday – July 12.
Continue on thru the pines of the lava lands. There is an Optional 24 mile 4x4 section that I plan on driving. Being a National Forest road I expect it to be rough but not tough. I will check on road conditions with the Forest Service before leaving. We should be near Goose Lake and the town of Davis Lake at the end of the day. We can drive into Alturas for gas and a motel or camp by Davis Lake.

Sunday – July 13.
Rock hounding for obsidian needles then drive over the Warner Mountains to Fort Bidwell and then back over via a different pass to New Pine Creek. We may ‘cheat’ a little if we are running out of time. Motel in Lakeview or camp at Goose Lake or drive home.

Monday – July 14:
Drive home if need be.

Information about the route can be found here:
Modoc National Forest - Welcome!

You will need an 4x4 vehicle. I expect a stock SUV 4x4 will be ok.
You will furnish your own food and camping equipment.
No fires (or stoves without a permit) if we have to dry camp outside of an established campground. Bring sufficient water.

Limit of six vehicles. If you are interested, email me at:

This really sounds like a neat trip and I wish I could go. I hope you guys take plenty of photos and share them with us when you get back. Maybe you could even post some sort of a general map of your route. As I understand it, this is one leg of the ONLY Back Country Discovery Route within the State of California and this part of it continues via regular logging roads into Oregon. Therefore it is not only something special within CA, it is right in our own backyard (so to speak). Have fun and we are looking forward to hearing about it.

Originally there was a route from the Oregon border down thru various National Forests to the Cow Creek BLM area which is near Clear Lake north of San Francisco. There was also a short segment NE of Los Angeles. The Modoc segment is the only segment still recognized as far as I know.

The east end of the Modoc route is the starting point of the Oregon BCDR.

It was a great trip.

We also did the Summer Lake to Chemult portion of the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route, Section two.

Will try to post a trip report within the coming week.
