Default IDAHO - Sawtooth NF Announces Big Wood Travel Management Plan Open House

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is evaluating public access and summer travel opportunities within the Big Wood River watershed. The public is invited to participate in the planning process by attending a public meeting May 22, 2014, at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters office, 5 North Fork Road, Ketchum, Idaho 83340. A project presentation will begin at 6:30p.m. and will be followed by questions and discussion.

The purpose of this planning effort is to bring road and trail use into compliance with the Forest Plan, laws, and regulations; to provide a system of roads and trails for public access and recreational travel; to manage unacceptable resource impacts that are occurring due to use of roads and trails; and to rehabilitate non-system routes identified as a problem to natural and cultural resources (soil, water, fish, plants, wildlife, heritage, etc.).

The Forest Service is in the process of compiling a complete route inventory to identify needs, issues, and concerns that will be considered in this planning effort. It is critical that they get your assistance in developing a travel system that meets your needs and expectations and protects natural resources. It is very important that you help identify desirable roads and trails that can be developed to standards that can safely and properly accommodate use. Your participation will help them better understand how people work and play in this area. During this meeting they hope to answer the questions below and discuss issues and concerns you have about travel management within the project area.

    • What kind of recreational activities do you participate in within the project area?
    • What mode of transportation do you use while recreating on Forest roads and trails in this area (i.e. foot, horse, mountain bike, motorcycle, ATV, UTV, full size vehicle)?
    • Where do you drive/ride/hike in this area? Please be specific, include a location description, route number or name, drainage, etc.
    • Do you use these routes as access for other activities such as firewood cutting, fishing, camping, etc.? Please specify.
    • Why are these routes important to you?
    • What time of year do you drive/ride/hike in the area (spring, summer, fall, winter,)?
    • What else would you like the Forest Service to know regarding this project?

You may also provide your input in writing. Please send it to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters office, 5 North Fork Road, Ketchum, Idaho 83340, or email your comments tocomments-intermtn-sawtoothnra@fs.fed.us. Comment deadline is May 30, 2014.

If you are interested in staying involved in this planning effort, please provide your name, mailing address, and email address to comments-intermtn-sawtooth-nra@fs.fed.us.
