Hi, looking forward to learning more about and having some adventures here in the PNW. I've been working on getting my '72 Bronco up to speed so that I can comfortably and reliably attack some back country areas with a particular eye on the WABDR later this summer.

Introduction:
Me - Software Professional trying to learn to be a mechanic - I'm getting better.
Experience - Minimal - I've driven some FS roads in my Bronco local to Issaquah / North Bend but not much more
Desire - To be a competent off road driver with a good knowledge of locally accessible roads and good places to go by the end of this season. Hoping to drive at least a couple sections of the WABDR this year.

Vehicle:
1972 Bronco Sport Red w/original White top - originalish owner (Dad bought it) - modified
351W - moderately warmed up
C4 Automatic
3.54 gearing
Dana 44 front
Dana 20 transfer case with 2:1 low range
Ford 9"
3.5" lift
33x12.5x15 MTRs with FS spare
Cut fenders with flares

It needs:
Some work on the ignition system
Lower gears
More aggressive diffs - Torsen type or lockers
Longer drive shafts to match the lift (I'm safe for the time being but if I get into some Moab style trails, I'd probably drop a driveline)
Ancillary stuff - high lift jack, plan for extra fuel, other things I hope to learn about on this forum

I think we are growing moss here at Horn Toad Ranch on the outskirts of beautiful downtown Yakima, "The Palm Springs of Washington." We have had the equivalent of two months of normal rainfall within the past three days! About an inch-and-a-half worth, and that's a lot since our yearly average, including snow, is only eight inches. Hey, our grass is green!

Saturday my wife and I drove to Newport to see her brother. Generally when we go over we spend the day geocaching and/or exploring the Coast range.

This time we decided to go a little further south and check out Roman Nose Mtn. and south.

So on a misty/overcast day we zip down to Florence which was getting ready for Rhododendron Days? Quite few motorcyclist's. Then east to Mapleton. At least a hundred or more bikers parked there. East a few more miles to the turn off to Roman Nose - Oops - locked gate. Back towards Mapleton and then down the east side of the river. The road we are looking for does not seem to exist. Let's try the next road - Sweet Creek. Up Sweet Creek, start climbing the ridge, get on top and drive south and then easy driving along the top of a series of ridges until we finally connect up with the mainline road heading south to Roman Nose. Climb the mountain the west side of which has been/is being logged. Can't see much for the fog/mist. And then down the mountain on the south side. The road turns to pavement and we sail down, down and down until we meet up with the West Fork Smith River road and we continue down it and finally the Smith River road and the Vincent Creek camp ground.

I though about going over the ridge at Vincent Creek to Hwy 38/Elkton but it was getting pretty late so west to hwy 101, Gardiner, Florence and back to Newport.

Nice drive even in the mist.

Here are a couple of photos from past.

My Dad, myself and my cousin were down fishing in a bass tournament on Silver Lake in Cowlitz County, Washington the weekend that Mt St Helens decided to blow its top. I was 16 sixteen at the time. A member of the bass club was also a photographer and shot the following images that morning. I took a iPhone photo of the prints that have been in storage.

My Dad had to make a run back to the lake resort and while we were motoring out of the lily pads, we looked up just as the eruption started (like you may have seen in the time lapse photos of the eruption).

All weekend long, we were hoping to at least see a steam eruption, well we got that and much more.

That's me with the long hair, around 8:00 AM that morning.

Right after the mountain blew.

Just a heads-up that if you're within listening distance of the Portland area repeater on 440.40 (+, PL 123.0), tonight at 7:30 PM it will be connected to the Western Reflector node carrying the Outdoor Adventure Net, which originates out of Southern California.

You can find general info on the Net and the group associated with it here:
http://www.oausa.net/ Tonight's topic is "Destinations." You can find an archive of past Nets here:
http://www.oausa.net/netrecordings. I've been listening to the archive and it sounds like a fun & informative Net on vehicle-based outdoor adventure.

I want to especially thank Michael Bloom, W7RAT, owner/control operator for the repeater for graciously agreeing to connect to the right node tonight.

Hi all, just joined and am learning more about four-wheel backcountry travel. I've been an active adventure motorcycle rider for years, but only discovered this type of travel a year ago. I took my wife on a trip to Moab and she was absolutely hooked and completely enthusiastic! It was great! She's always enjoyed taking the bike on trips, but I was blown away by how excited she was about exploring logging roads, trails, and backcountry camping. Wow! At the end of last summer we took our two teenage daughters on a trip to Yellowstone, staying off-pavement as much as possible and camping outside of established campgrounds. They did amazingly well, even if they weren't as enthusiastic as my wife.

Here's what I've been used to for years...

And here's what we got to explore overland travel on four wheels. It's a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero. Bone-stock other than the addition of larger tires, and it blew me away with how competent it was off the tarmac...
