Default Christmas Day Snowshoe Trip

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and an enjoyable day.

My wife, Joey, and I drove up toward Mt. Hood on Christmas morning intending to find some snow for snowshoeing. It wasn't too difficult with all the moisture-laden storms that are rolling in off the Pacific almost non-stop.

We started seeing some snow beside Hwy 26 after passing through Sandy but no rain or snow falling...yet. We turned off Hwy 26 onto Lolo Pass Road and there was a little bit of snowpack on the road and more beside the road. We drove up about four miles and turned off onto a FS road for another mile then parked and put our snowshoes on. There was just over a foot of snow on the road when we parked.

The snow started falling as we headed over the bridge crossing the Sandy River. We hiked for about three hours enjoying the falling snow, numerous animal tracks and the intense quiet. It snowed so hard that when we returned it was difficult to find our tracks.

We worked on some dead reckoning, compass and gps navigation situations during our walk.

It was a great day and we reluctantly headed back to town to have coffee and dessert with friends. Wish you could have joined us.

Mick

Nice report, Nick. Very enjoyable read. While you were trekking thru the woods we were snug in the kid's cabin near the community of Meacham in NE Oregon. Just returned a half-hour ago (Wed, 1:36 PM)

That sounds like a great way to spend Christmas day. It's been a few years since I strapped on a pair of snowshoes. I'll have to put it on my list of things to do this winter.

We'll be headed up to Price Creek (I-90) this weekend, probably Sunday. Might even strap on the skinny skiis for a while. Anyone want to join us?

Me, Wifey, Motor Mutt and Albinoable Snowboy.
