Default Went out in the snow today...

A friend and I decided to take a day trip up the 4200 line out od Toutle, our goal was to get up above Castle Lake and beyond. We did a few weeks ago before the big snow storms of last weekend with what snow was there. All trips so far have been at night as well too. However today we were going to try with the hope that the warmer temeratures and rain would have thinned the snow enough to get us there.

We have gotten about 7-8 miles in from the pavement and just started to get into the snow when we encountered our first obstacle. We were here last saturday night and the snow was about 10 inches deep, now just traces here and there.

So we sit here looking at this tree with no saw to cut it up with. I decide I would attempt to winch the tree out of the way with the hope of breaking it up. I would probably not have tried this with cable on the wich due to not knowing what strength the tree would have in store for us. I was always afraid of the limit of the cable, this being my first winch and having very little winching experience. We hooked up my strap and line to that and proceeded to pull on the tree. To my amazement it was working. The top broke first once it bound up on a stump, then not too much longer the base cracked and poped braking away for us to move the tree out of the way.

The rest of the day was alot of fun but very demanding on us for traction. The snow as all crusty and chunky. Not real good stuff to travel on but fun none the less. The winch sure did get its share of use today and sure was better than all the shoveling we did last year not having my new found friend.

I have been waiting for snow all summer so I could go up in it. I have been several times this year already but this is the first time I went in the day and took my camera as well.
Enjoy...

Time to use the winch...

This is why... I had no chainsaw so this was the solution. I would wich the tree out of the way and hope to break it in two...

Making progress...

Seems I have a good audience here...

Well, it worked out pretty well. The snapping and popping from the tree breaking was just awesome.

Looks like victory...

Stuck here and had to winch out using a tree to pull on...

Gotta love the scenery, just a few of the awesome views and photos today.

Another one...

Last one here...
