Default Hell's Canyon

Just remembering some trips in and around Hell's Canyon. No pic's or formal trip report.

We were on our way to Riggins Idaho to raft the lower Salmon/Snake rivers. East on I84 to Baker City where we turned east. Stopped and checked out the Oregon Trail museum - well worth doing and then continued on to Halfway and Hell's Canyon. Crossed the river and went down stream for a few miles (6 - 8?) and at the end of a camp ground turned right and went up, up and up the cliff on the Kleinschmidt Grade. Did not have time to explore the Cuprum area. After staying in Riggins, we explored the Seven Devil's. Interesting road system from just south of Riggins to White Bird.

On another trip on the Oregon side we went out to the Hat Point lookout.
Nice drive. Lot's of area to explore/see around Joseph, Troy, etc.

Small world, it was on the Kleinschmidt Grade (Idaho side of the Snake River in Hell's Canyon) where I saw my first "wild" rattlesnake, an experience I alluded to on this forum when we were talking about rattlers. It's someplace in the archives. The situation was quite funny and it had something to do with the results of drinking a lot of beer, but I wasn't drunk if you know what I mean.

I must admit that we spent several hours in the Cuprum (pronounced Coop-rum) Tavern later that night and THAT was NOT a good idea.

Ask me about the Hell's Canyon rattlesnake experience some time and I will tell you the whole story in person.
