The steel whip is removable, by loosening 1 set screw (with an allen wrench).

The magnet on the Wilson bases are very strong.

Looking on the web, I see some of the GMC Safari vans have roof rails. Does yours?

Possible wire routing:

Your windshield is glued into the body, it is not held in with a gasket or molding. There is a decorative trim, around the edge of the windshield, that you should be able to lift out of its groove. If you can do this, you might be able to place the cable, in the bottom of the grove, and press the trim back in place.

This will get the cable from the interior, through the firewall, and to the top of the door.

Then run the coax along the edge of the door frame (outside the rubber seal), to the back edge of the door frame.

Then a short jump over to the roof rail, where it can be routed out along the crossbar, to the centerline. Place the Mag Mount a few inches away from the crossbar.

If the cable won't fit in the windshield groove, you can run the cable through the door gasket (down low), bring it up along the door frame, and over to the roof rail, etc.

Going through the door gasket down low, will keep water and wind noise from becoming a problem.

Doors are sealed in different ways; some are easier to work with than others.

Take it to your local C.B. shop and have them install your Larson by drilling a hole in the roof. The coax will be hidden, the antenna will work better and when you trade the vehicle you simply unscrew the antenna and replace it with a black plastic cap. Chances are nobody will even notice the cap and if they do they will think it was for a cell phone.

Thanks for all the suggestions Photog. Last night I was tracing my door frame. Tight fit might pinch but I think it might do. I will try with my current coax cables - if it does work I think I will be ordering the Wilson.

Soggy thanks for the suggestion as well. I did think about that but I am one of those guys who does not like letting shops touch my vehicles. To give them credit they do their job but at the same time I have had too much mishaps. Also I do not know of any good CB shops out here except one for truckers and they want an arm and a leg for labor. My Larsen I dont think is that easy to remove the whip. It is held in with a washer as well under the mount >.<

Default good thread

"and when you trade the vehicle"

?
He will never trade that van. It may get stolen...where the leather seats will end up south of the border...but he will never trade it.

I need a CB this month. Suggestions on which to look at and which to avoid?

Thanks,

TL

We just installed a VHF/UHF antenna in the roof of my wife's car. We also have a mag-mount, but wanted something more permanent.

How do you like the 7800. I am going to be looking for a 2m/70 cm radio in the near future and that is one I am considering.
