Default Antenna help :)

Hi all,

I was curious as to what magnet mounted antenna you have tired and got good performance with?

Also are the Valor CB27WX antenna even worth a try?

What I am trying to do is get away with not using my long 4.5' antenna but at the time same I do not want to trade off quality / range.

I have had excellent results with the Wilson Little Wil. The Wilson 1000 or 5000 will provide a bit more range; but they are 5 feet long.

When I first set up my equipment, it sounded a bit weak; but that turned out to be an issue with the radio/mic combination. My radio is clear and powerful; but not loud. I now run a powered mic, and it works great.

l agree with Photog, the Lil Will works great and has just enough magnet to hold at higher speeds.

Ok just curious how much should that run me up? I assume the cable is detachable so I can permanently route the cable and then put up the magnet antenna when I need it?

Reason for asking is because I currently have a Larsen antenna - works great and is fantastic. Problem is that it was perfect on the truck but now with the Safari (finally going to put in a CB rather than use hand held) there is really a spot to mount it

It sounds like you are getting tricky with the antenna install. I used to do that with our collector cars, hide the coaxial cable and tuck the antenna base behind the spare tire when we entered the cars for judging in car shows. It's been a long time and I can't recall which antenna comes with a screw-on fitting. I think the Wilson 1000, but I'm not positive. Anyway, you can unscrew it so the coax fits through small holes.

Most folks just hook up the antenna on a temporary basis and run it out a window or through the door jam where the seal protects it from being crushed. If your antenna won't stick to the roof (i.e. fiberglass), just set it on the hood. After all, it is temporary.

Well that is the thing ... I kind of like to have the permanent install so no hassles, safe net and I can use any time

Well those Lil Will can be had for about $50 so I thinking maybe just try it. I could leave the cables all mounted and just keep the antenna in vehicle and when I want to use it stick it on because a lot of my problems is WHERE to mount it Can someone with the Lil Will please take a photo for me and confirm that I can physically detach the coax cable leave it tucked under my hood and put the magnet base + whip inside my vehicle for storage?

Much appreciated if someone can do that -
It is starting to sound like I will go this route rather than mount my Larsen antenna ... spent 30 minutes again today hand holding it everywhere on my vehicle for a mount point. Sadly the best spots would work but people here WILL rip it off

EDIT: FYI my antenna is a Larsen nmo 27 .. trimmed ;p I do not have a SWR but granted that the Wilson will probably work right off the bat when I do tune it do you suppose it will give as good performance as what I am use to? The antenna has given me some crazy performance in the past hah ha.

The Lil Wil magnet does not separate from the coax.

I routed my cable out throut the firewall, along the windshield (under the decorative trim), and along the roof rack to the Mag base.

When I am not using the CB, I remove the whip from the base, and store it in the vehicle. But I leave the base, where you see it in the image below.

You can see it mounted here, in front of my wind deflectors.

I know you said you are looking for a Mag Mount; but you also say you want to leave the wire in place, and remove the mount. This sounds more like a permanent mount system.

The Wilson 500 is supposed to be a better performer, and you can keep the height down by using the "Short Load" antenna, in the 500 base.

The best performance location for the antenna is the center of your metal roof. Other locations work; but this is best.

I believe the Safari van has a metal roof.

Oh crappy!
I feel like I am back to square one and I was so ready to order. Thank you for the clarification.

Hmmm when you say remove the whip, it is detachable from the magnet quite easily? Maybe exactly what you have there is the same I can do. But does that magnet hold very well? thank you for your time, much appreciated!

Yes she does. But I do not have nice trimming to hide coax cable. But at least I can now go stare at it again and see if there is something I can do
