Default HAM practice

Here is a link to a page where you can take "practice" tests. http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl You can do this over and over again until you feel comfortable with it and then go to a local testing place to take the test for real. Hope this helps. I have been practicing off and on for a little while but have never gotten around to taking the real test, despite the nudging of a good friend/radio operator.

That's awesome. Now I don't have to track down a book to practice with.

Thanks for the link.

Jim, that's good advice, at least that's the way I did it. I have a light electronics background and that helped too but anyone should be able to study that way and then pass the exam.

Here's a link to the Hoodview Amateur Radio Club in Gresham. They schedule exams at Mt. Hood CC.

Send me a PM when you get a chance and I'll return with my email & cell phone # so we can stay in touch. I live just below you in Fairview.

Thanks for the link. I took 3 different mock up tests just for fun and did better than I thought I would. It was probably coincidence that the questions on my tests were easy ones. Anyway my scores were 77.1%, 66.7% and 77.1%. Two passes and one flunk. I did not pursue the correct answer to those I missed so as to maintain my current level of incompetence...er, ah, knowledge. I plan to use the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual for my studies. Here goes nothing.

Jerry, once you get in the 90s consistently schedule a test and go for it. You'll be ready.

Thanks for the link. Are you a member of the Hood River Amateur Radio Club? Under their Links section are several sites that offer simulated tests. I took one and earned a measly 60% score so studying is definitely in my future. Since my last post I ordered the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual and am expecting it to arrive in a few days. Guess what I will be doing?

I'm not familiar with the Hood River Club. I've been to the Hoodview Club site in Gresham a few times and know they schedule tests.

I'm probably not going to get bitten too badly by the Amateur Radio bug. So far I'm just interested in having better communications on trips. Also, most of my trips in past years have been solo so I can see the possible safety issue of having a stronger radio signal (providing someone out there is listening).

I think you'll do real well with the ARRL Manual. That gives you the explanation and basis for the questions. Keep us posted. You'll need a cheering section.

Well, it's the beginning of 2008 and I am challenging you guys, once again, to get your amateur radio operators licenses before spring. Let's say between now and May 1st? That's over a month past the first day of spring, but close enough for us overland challengers! If you spend 20 minutes to a half-hour every day reading and taking mock tests you can pass the exam within a month or two.

Here are a couple more Amateur links to keep the interest going, you can add them to your new Favorites-Ham Radio Folder:
