Default How many vehicles?

When you lead a road trip, how many vehicles do you like having on your tour?

To me it depends on what kind of tour, but for typical dirt roads I feel most comfortable with 3 to 5 vehicles.

Never lead one, but personally I like larger groups.

Much more than 3-5 and you run the risk of getting separated and too strung out.

3-5 is my vote (for unpaved tours)

I would agree, maybe extending it out to 7 vehicles tops, including me. More than that gets to be a planning hassle and just dealing with issues like letting motorcycles and quads go by or asking someone coming the other direction to pull over and wait while your wagon train goes by...

But I guess I am coming from the standpoint of slow trail and rock crawls where getting strung out is rarely an issue. Tight/narrow trails with little room to pass is much more of a concern in that situation.

I've been on runs with 10-15 vehicles and not too many stretched out problems.

You can also make it two seperate groups.

I agree with the 7 and under figure, but on wider, easier trails more is fine. The key, as I see it, is communication. It *really* makes a difference having everyone connected by CB radio.

I'd say it definitely depends on the trail. The only thing I can think of that has not already been mentioned is following in a sea of dust. That can spread out a group quite a bit as well. And is progressively less fun the further back in the pack you may be.

'Driving conditions' aside, it becomes a matter of handling the number of people in and out of campsites / restaurants / bathroom breaks / photo-opts / etc. So with that in mind, and vehicles seating between 2 and 4 persons, I would think 5 to 10 vehicles would be acceptable, if you could get that many to commit to going on a regular occasion.

And personally, bigger groups are more comfortable for new people. Better chance of personalities lining up
