Nice, Tim!!
If I remember right you can get an older vehicle licensed with an inspection. Do they require more than 20 years of age. That should fit the bill. On a practical side, think how many scouts will fit in it!

Apparently as long as the vehicle is 25 years old or older, there is very little paperwork required in getting the vehicle licensed and registered. Newer than that and it's nearly impossible and extremely expensive.
Twelve [12] Scouts, Mick! That is with three along each sideways-facing bench seats in the way-back and a middle seat up front.
Funny, but I've thought of that. We'll be going to Philmont in a few years so this could come in handy!

I say go for it. You will have a different vehicle from the everyone else. As for the drive thru issue, I drove a Camaro in Japan that was left side drive, and japanese cars are right side drive so I had the same issue you will be facing but opposite, and it didn't bother me a bit. It actually worked out better because the drivers side window didn't go down!

I'm new here. I have to say I have a Discovery and have always wanted a Defender 110. That thing is the true bullet proof Land Rover. Getting one of those plus an overland adventure down under. Sorry man, I'm no help in talking you out of this.
I've done a lot of looking into what it would take to get one of those over here and you are correct about the 25 year rule. I would even go for an old Series III 109. I'm jealous to say the least.
Hehe. There is a Taco Bell in Portland (or was it a Wendy's?.......) that has the drive-thru on the right hand side. It's on Sandy Blvd near a Jiffy Lube.
Gonna be a fun adventure for sure. Kinda like one of those arrangements where you fly to Europe to pick up your new sportscar from the factory and take it on vacation. But better!
I'm not sure of WA but in OR the DEQ cut off is 1975 and new gets tested. Used to be 25 years but they changed it to a locked in year. I only remember this from when I owned an old Volvo. I wish it still was 25 years. Save me alot of hassle with the Soob.

Are you prepared to do all of your own maintenance and wait for extended periods of parts? Everything from a full engine rebuild to diagnosing weird electrical problems? If yes then by all means go for it!
Yes, of course! Full engine rebuild would be "full engine replacement" time! When the stock drivetrain gets to be a maintenance problem, I'd be swapping in domestic diesel (4BT?), transmission, t'case and perhaps axles too.
This would be my toy anyway. So extended down time would be fine.
The whole plan is being put on hold for now though. Not killed. Just delayed. I WILL do this one of these days....
