I looked into that for my 80-series. Besides the potential emissions issue (plus all the engine accessories won't fit) of an older engine, it would not fit under the hood of my FJ80. The 2F engine blocks are about 2.5 inches taller than the 3FE.

You guys need to move over here to the east side........no emissions testing........yet, and we could put a "bump" in the hood!

The engine is out and on the stand. I conducted spot check of the bottom end and things look pretty good. The rod thrust clearance was all within spec. The rod bearings and rod journals look in great shape. I plastigaged a couple of rod journals and all within spec (still needs a micrometer to determine true condition)

My next step is to have the short block professional evaluated. I hope to have it to a machine shop today.

Today I dropped off my short block and head to the machine shop.

With out a lot of feedback on recommended shops, I chose Bud's Machine and Engine Shop in Lakewood, Washington. The main reason I decided to go with Bud's is because the owner Bud mentioned there were "options". Most shops simply wanted to sell me a short or long block. Bud offered, for a hourly rate, to tear down and evaluate the short block and provide recommendations on what is needed and what fits my budget. He'll work it out so that I can assemble as much or as little of the short block as I want to take on.

Also, it was good to have the shop machinist ask if it was a 2F engine. Even though it wasn't, it was good to hear they know a little about rebuilding the Toyota engine.

So far, it looks like a minimum of a rebore of all the cylinders. He'll give a recommendation on whether the crank needs reground or simply cleaned up. The same with the other internal components.

Many people on ih8mud.com have recommended to install a cam from Delta Camshaft in Tacoma to increase the top end (and I need every little bit I can muster to get up and over the passes).

Since Waterhouse in Tacoma closed its doors, all the remaining machine shops in the area are a week or two out on work. So hopefully, by the end of next week, I'll have an idea on what needs to be done.

Steve,
Your rig has a big hole in it. It looks bad.

Any news on the engine and new pistons?

Hope to see you rolling again soon.

Hey Brian,

The engine is in the shop for an evaluation to see what actually needs done. I won't hear back until late this week on the condition and a quote.

Realistically, while everything is apart, everything will be reconditioned/rebuilt with maybe the exception of the crank.

I hope all is well with you and Cindy.
