This is funny.... I'm soon to be looking for an XJ myself and was thinking it would be nice to rig up some sort of awning for it for camping and such. I'll be looking forward to your details and pictures!

I have the actual awning made. I just picked up the nylon strapping and buckles tonight to hold it to the roof rack and to bundle it when rolled. Ill have my daughter help me sew it in the next day or so (she does apolstry work). Then I'll be able to get some better pics and post to here. I have had it set up with zip ties and its KEWL! rolls up to about 4 inches in diameter and 8 ft long along the rain gutters. I am trying to find a third cross bar for my rack so I can have three anchor pts and still use my rack to hold my spare on top. Its all made with an 8x10 heavy silver tarp from Lowes and 4 sticks of 1 inch plastic conduet. total cost with straps and all is about $35.

OK, Here are the pics I said were comming. The pics arent perfect, but give a good idea on what its all about. The bags from old jeans are storage of my tire chains and make wonderful anchors for guy ropes. The corner poles also come apart and shorten for when its raining harder and you need to be able to let the water run off. takes about a minute to set up alone. First test will hopefully be on the GEO Cache challenge in march!

Very cool! Thanks for posting the pics!

Snap a few actual camp pics with the awning in use. That's probably going to work out to be a really nice sunshade and rain-protection (for sitting, perhaps!) for you. Good deal!

I dont know how many times we have been out on runs or just exploring on our own and had it raining when we were eating lunch and wished we had a place to get out of the rain. Now we can use this and stay dry and out of the hot sun! I think it will fill the bill quite nicely!
