I went out on a night run the other weekend at Brown's camp with a few other FJs, and it was pretty cool running the woods in the dark. The forest really takes on a entirely different atmosphere at night.
Anyway, one of the other FJs had a set of 55 watt fog lights mounted under his rig, and it really helped out when crawling over the rocks and tree stumps, being able to see his wheel placement.
I was considering installing a set, but I was concerned about yet another battery drain, the heat generated, glass lights under the rig, mounting points, etc.
Then someone turned me on to Tantrum LED Rock Lights. These things are pretty cool. They come with 8 light pods, are small (1-1/2" dia), generate virtually no heat, have no glass, are waterproof, and best yet, all 8 only pull about 1.3 amps. They are bright enough (2 watts each pod) to let you see what you need to, but not so bright that they will blind you when you are off driving in total darkness.
What I really like is the ambient light generated... this should be great when camping.
Anyway I ordered a set for $100 from Amazon and installed them last night. Kind of a pita to install, the worst part was just running 8 friggin cables and keeping them away from the exhaust system and up out of the way so they won't catch on anything when wheeling.
Once I got it all installed, I tested it in the garage in total darkness, and they work pretty darn good! I can't wait to test them when we go camping on this weekend up by Govt Camp.
And the best part....
