The Colockum Challenge, 06-11-08 Photo by Steve The Colockum Mid-Week Challenge June 11, 2008 It's another mid-week tour for you weekend workers and otherwise available backroad explorers, this time to the State of Washington Colockum Wildlife Area. It may be a bit of a challenge to reach the heights of Colockum Pass if snow lingers into June, but we're going anyway and we hope to access the area via the old wagon road between Wenatchee and Ellensburg. Side roads meander through sparsely treed forests with open expanses of shrub steppe allowing valley views and far-off vistas. Road conditions my change our plans to some extent, but there are several alternate routes. High ground clearance vehicles such as SUV's and pickups are a must and 4-wheel drive will be a real plus. Meet us at: PERKIN'S RESTAURANT 1504 N US Highway 97 Ellensburg, WA (509) 925-4662 Interstate 90, Exit 106, turn into Perkins parking lot at the Pilot Station. Look for my red Ford Bronco II with Backroad Drivers Northwest window stickers and feel free to join us inside the restaurant. Plan to leave at 9:00 AM Remember, WEDNEDSAY, June 11th! I hope you can make the trip, Jerry
