It sounds like you are getting tricky with the antenna install. I used to do that with our collector cars, hide the coaxial cable and tuck the antenna base behind the spare tire when we entered the cars for judging in car shows. It's been a long time and I can't recall which antenna comes with a screw-on fitting. I think the Wilson 1000, but I'm not positive. Anyway, you can unscrew it so the coax fits through small holes.
Most folks just hook up the antenna on a temporary basis and run it out a window or through the door jam where the seal protects it from being crushed. If your antenna won't stick to the roof (i.e. fiberglass), just set it on the hood. After all, it is temporary.
